Opening of Tripoli Road Village

On the 25th of February 2022, more than 70 stakeholders joined the online launch of our new Tripoli Road Village, co-hosted by Island Child and Tāmaki Regeneration Company (TRC). Island Child Taumata adviser and supporter Matua Laurie Nicholas led with a mihi and later shared meanings of Māori artwork incorporated into Village.

The Minister of Housing Hon Dr Megan Woods, Associate Minister for Housing Hon Marama Davidson, local MP Hon Jenny Salesa, and TRC CEO Shelley Katae each acknowledged Island Child’s contribution in the transitional housing space. Our new patron, former Minister of Auckland, Hon Judith Tizard also attended along with our Taumata advisers Matua Laurie Nicholas and Whaea Lorna Rikihana well as mana whenua and marae representatives, government agency participants, NGO stakeholders, and community supporters.

This is local and central government working together with community to make a difference, so that more New Zealanders have a place to call home.”

Hon Dr Megan Woods I Minister of Housing

Government alone absolutely cannot address homelessness. … Dani, with whom I’ve had a long association, is an example of the heart of care and manaaki. Transitional housing is a key part to ending homelessness while we keep a sharp eye on more permanent longer-term housing.”

Hon Marama Davidson I Associate Minister for Housing (with responsibility for addressing homelessness)
